Robert Witt Waldorf Scholarship Endowment

Robert began his career in Waldorf education at the Detroit Waldorf School and later became Honolulu Waldorf School’s first administrator in the 1980s. His vision and steadfast leadership helped lay the foundation for the school we know today. As a devoted parent, Robert’s bond with the school deepened as his two sons, Eli and Nathan, attended HWS, and he remained a guiding presence in our community for decades.

In a gesture of love and generosity, Robert donated the play structures in our big yard in memory of his beloved son, Eli Witt - a gift that continues to bring joy and laughter to our students daily. Robert was also an animal lover who introduced us to Manu, our sweet therapy dog. After serving as Interim Head of School alongside Roberta Bishop during the 2018–2019 school year, Robert remained a familiar and comforting figure on campus. Many students fondly remember “Uncle Robert” walking the halls with Manu or attending school events with his ever-present warm smile and kind words.

Beyond the walls of Honolulu Waldorf School, Robert was a powerful force in shaping education across Hawai‘i. He served as the founding Executive Director of the Hawai‘i Association of Independent Schools (HAIS) from 1989 until his retirement in 2014. During his 25-year tenure, he strengthened school accreditation processes in partnership with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and supported professional development for educators and leaders statewide. He also co-founded Mālama Honua Public Charter School with Nainoa Thompson, further demonstrating his commitment to culturally grounded, place-based education for future generations.

Through his leadership, mentorship, and unwavering belief in the potential of every child, Robert inspired countless educators and touched the lives of students across the islands. His thoughtful, steady presence leaves an enduring legacy within the independent school community and the broader educational landscape of Hawai‘i.
